story of air the 1000th summer

Yukito Kunisaki is on a journey, seeking a girl with wings who flies in the sky, as mentioned in a childhood tale. During this journey, he settles down in a small town, trying to make some money. There, he meets a strange girl named Misuzu. Misuzu quickly makes Yukito her friend and invites him to stay with her. Yukito decides to stay in the small town, and continue searching for the winged girl his mother had searched for in her life. A young man gets of a bus at a rather lonely-looking bus stop. He needs two things: Ramen, and money to buy it with. Spotting a nearby gathering of children, he decides to show them his amazing puppet - one that moves, with no strings attached . They refuse to cough up any payment for the service, though, and take off, leaving him with his puppet..and no money. The puppet is carried away as well, by a crow..With nowhere to crash, he takes a short nap on the nearby pier, though when he wakes up..there's a strange girl standing next to him.She seems awfully concerned for him, for someone he's never seen before. She offers to buy him a drink..and doesn't quite make it back smoothly. Nor does our hero particularly enjoy the drink offered him.Nevertheless, the girl tags along with him as he passes through the town, asking him to play with her. Their conversation is cut short as the wanderer realizes he doesn't have his puppet with him..The girl goes with him to look around for it..but seems more interested in the crow than the puppet :) Our protoganist still doesn't want anything to do with this ditzy girl, but she persists and we learn their names, he is KUNISAKI Yukito, and she is MISUZU Kamiya. And she still wants to play with him. Playtime must wait, however, before Yukito passes out from hunger, so Misuzu-chan invites him over to her house for some good ol' ramen. She wants him to stay, and he's not exactly thrilled with the idea, but ends up sticking around to help her with some homework. Misuzu-chan's mother. MISUZU Haruko. I have no idea why she lets her daughter, who is so terribly deprived of any street-sense whatsoever, wander the streets alone all day, but she takes charge here. And she wants to know what some strange guy is doing in her house, alone, with her daughter. A perfectly reasonable question, I'd say. With a little help from Misuzu-chan..he doesn't quite convince her mother of his good intentions. But, she lets him stay over. As long as he watches over Misuzu-chan . Yukito becomes the official Don't-Let-Misuzu-Chan-Do-Anything-Stupid guy.The next day, Yukito is looking to start earning his keep. Misuzu-chan draws him a map to help him about..although its helpfulness is questionable. It isn't long before our hero encounters a small white dog, who is entranced by the Amazing Puppet..so much so he decides he wants it for himself. After a short chase, Yukito coners the dog on a bridge, lunges, and...totally misses him. The dog's owner appears, introduces herself (KIRISHIMA Kano) and her dog, Potato (or Poteto, depending on how accurately you want your katakana translated), and apologizes for the incident (She can understand what Potato says.Yukito notices the ribbon on her arm, and asks if it's a bandage..it's not, but the girl won't tell what it *is* for. She leads him on, apparently intending to show him the way to some customers for him..but then suddenly ditches him (though, not without first leaving a cryptic comment about him, surprisingly, using 'magic'. It might have been less cryptic had I understood more of the conversation). Yukito determines that everyone from the girls' school are nuts.
