I just finished reading Iruka's blog about being nice, maybe more nice then in real life, as we talk to each other on the site. You can read their blog
here.
I think they are 100% correct. However, I don't think its anything special about this site. My experiences on the internet have always been in an invironment that was more polite then in real life. Granted, most of it has been spent (wasted?) on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) back in the mid 90's, but I would hope it also applies to boards and other forms (forums) of communication found online.
Most of the time, the politeness is required, its a natural result of communicating in a text only world. There is no body language to help you interpret a sentance. Something nice or kind said with the right body language, in real life, may seem completely offensive when just reading it as a sentance in a forum. So extra effort is required when communicating via text, you have to be extra nice, extra kind, with extra compliments, otherwise you may be misunderstood.
Perhaps its not that way any more, but it used to be the reason why. And maybe now its only just the result of an original cause that will be long forgotten in internet history. Perhaps it was just the result of the first ones, who established a friendly environment online, away from the terrors of the real world...
That be my 2 cents ;-)
