The Vatican had been quite for about a week now, and was 1 day from February 14. Abel hadn't been roaming the halls or begging for a few more dinars. William well he had been busy with the university. As for Tres, out on a mission. Really no one know were anyone was. Esther would just walk around till she saw Abel, and even then he acted like he didn't see her. It was odd. Tres would try and have a conversation with the little red headed nun, but now he wouldn't even notice her. Like you couldn't see her or something along those lines.
Finally she had it. She once more wondered the halls, but this time when she saw Abel she didn't just wave and yell his name, no, she did something she knew he could ignore. She got a running start, but instead of stopping in front of his like a good dog would, she full on tackled him! “OW! Miss Esther what was that for!?”, asked Father Abel Nightroad looking at the pale face of the nun on top of him.
“Oh so now you notice me.”, she said rolling her eyes. Abel blinked.
“What do you mean? I haven't been ignoring you. I've just been in a hurry so much I haven't even had time to say hello or get some tea.”, he said reaching for his disregarded glasses. The nun got off of him and helped him up.
“Well seems you have free time now. How about we get you some tea?”, she asked tiring to hid the redness that came over her face. Abel, tho pretending not to notice he blush, wrapped an arm around her shoulders and smiled down at her.
“I think my ankle got hurt when you tackled me, so........”, he closed his ice blue eye's and smiled even more. This made Esther blush even deeper.
“ABEL!”, she yelled at the top of her lungs. He looked down at her with a frown.
“I......Esther are you okay?”, he asked taking his arm of her. With all support off of her she fell. “Miss Esther!? Were dose it hurt? Are you okay!?”, asked the priest panicked. Esther looked down at her 'injured' leg.
“I don't know why but my thigh just started to hurt.”, she said holding it with a look of pain on her face. Abel being the normal everyday nice guy he was just had to help. He carefully picked her up in his arms and looked down into her face. To see if it caused her more pain. Not seeing a look of discomfit come to her face, carried her to the small room she was assigned. He had a hard time opening the door, but opened it non the less. After placing her on her bed, and placing a blanket over her, Abel finally spoke.
“Miss Esther.........I want to stay here till you fall asleep......if that's okay.”, he said blushing a bit. Esther just looked at him and smiled.
“No....it's okay with me Father.”, she said cheerfully. His face let a smile cross it as he looked at Esther. The little red headed nun that keep him going. He didn't know why, she just did.
“Oh um....By the way!”, he said reaching into the pocket of his robes and pulling a small box out, “Well......ummmm.....February 14 is coming up and well......I just well got you a little something.”
When he said this he had turned his head away trying to hid the face that he was blushing, and not wanting to show that he really wanted her to take it. Tho for the Esther, her face just as red, was stunned.
“You........what.......”, was all she could muster herself to say. Abel felt his heart brake a little as he turned his head to look at her.
“If you don't want it I'll understand. Just forget I even said anything. I'm sorry Miss Esther.”, he babbled out as he tucked the little box back into his pocket. Well tried to. Esther had grabbed his arm, and finally, with the right chosen words, said what she really should have said.
“No......Father I'm sorry it's just I was a little stunned that you did that.....”, he eye's were looking down at there hands, “Really.....well........I........”
She didn't know what to say, so she leaned over to the bed stand and opened the second drawer down. She reached in and picked up a neatly wrapped gift with red paper and a pink ribbon. Nearly thrusting it into his hands he picked up the tag. The tag read ,
To:Abel
From: Esther
Tho I look at you from a far,
Tho you see me as just a friend,
I hope we can be something more,
One day hand in hand
He read the poem several more time before looking over to Esther who had a pillow in front of her face for some reason. He reached his hand over and gently pulled it down from her face. Red, if not redder then her hair, was her face. Abel, still not opening the gift, handed hers. It wasn't wrapped as well, or have a nice ribbon on it. Tho because it was from Abel, it was the most wonderful thing in the world to her. The wrapping papers was a light blue, almost powder blue, and the tag was just a piece of paper from a mission report. Carefully she made out his writing. In which this one read,
To: Esther
From: Abel
I know you look at me,
I know you see me as more then a friend,
I know we both want something more,
Something more then just hand in hand
Both a little more flustered then just blood red, slowly opened there gifts. Abel hands were shaking, and small bead of sweat were on his forehead. He was to nerves to even keep his breath from wheezing as he pulled the ends of the ribbon. Once off he put it on the bed, next to Esther, and pulled at the paper. Slowly it made small tearing sounds. He took one last gulp he pulled the last of it off, and looked at a small white box. Opening it he saw what she had gotten him.
While Abel had been slowly removing the paper of his gift, she was doing the same. She read the tag one more time, then pulled at the light blue paper. Her hands just as shaky, if not more. Really she had less to worry about then Abel. She didn't have to remove a bow or open a small white box, but she did get a jump when there was a jewelry box setting in her hand. She opened it slowly to see what the silver haired man had gotten her.
They both made sharp gasp as they looked inside the small boxes. Abel's contained a new gold pocket watch with a small red cross in the middle. On the inside were the very words on the tag, but with one more phrase. Just three simple little words that really meant the world to him. Coming from Esther they meant more then the world. I love you.
Esther's contained a heart shaped locket. Inside there was a picture of her and Abel. She remember the day he had that taken. He didn't tell her what it was for, but know she knew. Inside the locket were only three words. The same as in Abel's pocket watch. They were both deeply colored with red as they looked at each other. Ice blue meet the dark blue of the nun. Nothing more was said.
